Let’s talk about your karma—your action. You are doing exactly what you wanted to do. Here’s a good example.

During one summer, I was in India staying in a beach hotel. The hotel was alongside an isolated beach.

I stayed at this secluded hotel for a long while, taking numerous walks along the beach, morning and evening, and sometimes also at midnight. While I was walking, I became friends with a man who lived in a nearby village. He was about 60 year old and belonged to the fishing community. He would come and attempt to fish there, throwing his hook into the ocean while standing on the shore. Through talking to him, I found out more about this man. Believe it or not, he hadn’t caught even a single fish in the past six months.

Nevertheless, he came every day—morning and evening—and spent about eight hours trying to catch a fish, and each day he went home with nothing. For six months, he had no success fishing at this spot. But still, he returned each day and threw his net at the same spot. This is what I call heavy duty fishing karma! He was unconscious, not really looking at what he was doing. Each day he showed up and tried to fish, knowing that it was very unlikely he would catch a fish there. I inquired about who took care of him. He said his wife; his wife was smart. She was also into fishing, but she fished at a place where there were fish. She sold them and also brought some fish home for dinner. This man performed the same thing over and over again without any success. If I go back to India, I will probably still find him doing the same thing...

Why couldn’t he change his job? What kept him from moving to another place and doing something else? He wouldn’t change. Why? Because of karma. For this lifetime, he decided that he would be a fisherman, and he would do fishing whether it was lucrative or not. I know one day he will die. He will come back again and perhaps fish again until his fishing karma is done.

The lesson here is it is very important: fish where the fish are, and if the fish have moved on, so should you!
